The School District of La Crosse is celebrating teachers.
Tuesday was ‘Thank a Teacher Day’.
Volunteers started off the morning by delivering fresh fruit, donuts and muffins to schools.
At North Woods International School, teachers and staff gathered with members of the La Crosse Community Foundation and Mayor Mitch Reynolds for some in-person recognition.
After nearly a year of virtual learning, teachers say it is nice to be able to celebrate.
“It just feels good to know that people appreciate what we’ve done and what we’re doing for all of our students,” said North Woods International School 2nd grade teacher Becky Misch.
North Woods Elementary selected as International Baccalaureate school

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) North Woods International School in the School District of La Crosse will now offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program, making it one of only 14 elementary schools in the state to have the distinction.
“It is so exciting to have been selected as an IB school,” said North Woods International School Principal Keri Holter. “We strive to have students see connections everywhere and see differences as strengths and opportunities for positive change in the world. We use a rigorous curriculum and weave overall instructional best practices like equity and social/emotional learning throughout. Learning at North Woods is a celebration of all the very best elements education has to offer.”
North Woods Elementary granted international baccalaureate status
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - North Woods International School is now one of only 14 other elementary schools in the state to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program.
The La Crosse School District said the Primary Years Program is for students between the ages of 3 to 12. According to the district, It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is a framework guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived
from six subject areas, as well as transdisciplinary skills, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – It can be scary learning something new. We introduce you to a North Woods International School teacher who embraces what’s tricky.
Sometimes the best way to learn is by doing. First grade is where children take a big step. Tara Schuttenhelm spent the last 21 years teaching children how to navigate a society built on reading and numbers.
“I think first grade is such a huge year for reading,” Schuttenhelm said. “I think I’ve always wanted to be a teacher.”
Masks inspired by culture, a hobby turned into a business

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) Mask-making has become one of the most popular hobbies this year – for obvious reasons – and one local parent has gotten really good at it.
“We had a student who we noticed always had masks that fitted extremely well, like very form-fitted to her face. We were very impressed… so my student-teacher asked, ‘where do you get those? Who makes those for you?’ and she said, ‘my mommy does! ” Hannah DeYoung, a kindergarten teacher at North Woods International School said.
When this little girl’s mom, Ge Lee, heard about the excitement over her masks, she called North Woods International School and asked if staff would like some.
