The Wings Over Willcox Festival Is In Full Flight.

THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of sandhill cranes are descending
on Willcox and the Sulphur Springs Valley, which means it s time
for the fifth-annual Wings Over Willcox festival.
This year is shaping up to be one of the best years for the festival.
More than 21,000 cranes have come to winter in the area; that s
nearly twice the average mid-winter count, says Ron Olding, Arizona
Game and Fish Department regional wildlife program manager.
On top of that, Wings Over Willcox program chairman Bob Coder
says the Willcox Chamber of Commerce will continue to expand its ....

El Paso weather: NWS forecasts more wind and dust Monday

The NWS predicts light north northeast wind from seven to 10 mph on Tuesday afternoon.
On Sunday, the El Paso International Airport recorded wind gusts up to 45 mph. Dust from parts of Mexico lowered visibility in the El Paso-Juarez region.
610pm: Dust continues to blow from several sources across the region. A dust plume from the Willcox Playa in AZ has made it all the way to T-or-C now, though it s more aloft. TOMBSTONE You can hear their cacophony long before you can see the sandhill cranes at Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area. It’s a thunderous clacking as thousands of the big birds trumpet back and forth.
As the sun sinks, wave after wave of the migratory birds glide gently to the wetlands below, wings outstretched like paragliders. They roost overnight in these wetlands, about 30 miles southeast of Tombstone, safe from coyotes, after a day spent socializing and foraging for grain in nearby fields.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of sandhill cranes fly south from northern North America to the southern U.S. to winter in warmer climates, including Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. This year, a record 47,000 cranes were recorded in mid-January between Whitewater Draw and the nearby Willcox Playa, which is a dry lake most of the year. The record it broke had been set in 2010. ....
