May 4, 2021 James Blazier Selected as Next City of Wheeling Fire Chief WHEELING, W.VA. – City Manager Robert Herron has announced that James Blazier, a 32-year veteran of the Wheeling Fire Department, has been selected as the next fire chief upon the retirement of current chief, Larry Helms, effective July 1. “James’ education and professional experience is a great fit for the Chief’s role. I believe he will continue the tradition of excellence in fire, rescue and EMS that the residents of Wheeling have grown accustomed while advancing the department,” said Herron. A life-long resident of Wheeling, Blazier is looking forward to his new role. ....
From Staff Reports WHEELING One person is dead and three more were injured after a multi-vehicle crash at the merge point of Interstate 70 and Interstate 470 East in Elm Grove on Sunday evening. The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, Wheeling Police Department spokesman Philip Stahl said. Based on initial reports, Stahl said, a delivery truck hit a passenger vehicle, and the passenger vehicle then hit a semi truck. The woman driving the passenger vehicle died, Stahl said. The delivery truck caught on fire, which prompted a full response by the Wheeling Fire Department. At one point, Stahl said, I-70 East, I-470 East and National Road all were closed in order for the fire department to extinguish the delivery truck fire. Both interstate routes were closed for several hours as crews cleaned up the crash site. ....

Wheeling firefighters and two tow companies went on a different kind of fishing expedition in Wheeling Creek on Wednesday morning. They were trying to hook a pickup truck. The driver of the truck had parked in an alley near a storage facility on Wheeling Creek near Market Street last week. Somehow, Wheeling Fire spokesman Philip Stahl said, the truck rolled away over the embankment and into the creek. Ace Garage, the fire department and Braden’s Towing all came together Wednesday to pull the truck out of the water. Firefighters floated on a raft to the truck with the water sitting just below its roof and fastened it to the tow truck. In a couple of hours, it was out of the water. ....
