Sampson selected to be state's first veterans cemetery

Seneca County will be the home of the state’s first veterans cemetery.
That decision came on Monday with a vote to identify Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery as a state veterans cemetery.
The vote was unanimous among the nine-member committee tasked with selecting a site for the state’s first veterans cemetery. The size of the property and existing operation made Sampson a front-runner in the selection process. However, there were nearly a dozen responses to the state’s initial request.
The region’s state lawmakers were not only instrumental in the naming of Sampson as the state’s first veterans cemetery, but applauded the decision ahead of Memorial Day. ....

Erie soldier lost en route to Vietnam to be remembered this weekend

An Erie soldier and others killed almost 60 years ago in what s been called one of aviation s greatest mysteries will be remembered during a ceremony in Maine on Saturday.
Staff Sgt. Leslie Salada was among 107 passengers and crew killed when Flying Tiger Line Flight 739 seemingly exploded en route to Vietnam on March 16, 1962. They will be remembered by family members during the unveiling of a monument in their honor in Columbia Falls, Maine.
The monument is on land donated by Wreaths Across America founder Morrill Worchester on the edge of a balsam forest where brush is harvested each year to make wreaths that are placed on veterans graves. ....

BUXTON/CASCO – Janette A. Shaw, 92, passed away peacefully at her home after a brief illness. She was born in Portland Oct. 27, 1928, daughter to the late Floyd Putnam of Connecticut and Dorothy McCubrey Tenney of South Portland. Janette grew up in South Portland and attended schools there graduating from South Portland High School. She met her late husband of 53 years her senior year as he returned from serving in the Navy in the South Seas during WWII. They married after graduation and raised their five children in South Portland, West Gorham, and later Standish. ....
