Tokoroa landlord charging $770 a week for two-bedroom unit


The high asking price comes amid a major shortage of rentals in the South Waikato which has the region’s fastest rising house prices outside Hamilton City. Despite the shortage, three bedroom rentals in the town average at around $400 a week.

Stuff am659, who did not reveal his identity, defended the figure.
“It is for emergency housing. Some people in need can be supported by Work and Income, he said.
When asked if he had had any enquires he paused before saying “sometimes” and hung up.

Eating a pie, smelling like cigarettes, rude, and poorly presented - some emergency housing clients are showing up to rental viewings to tick a box to stay in cheaper accommodation, rental agents say.
When they re
turned away, some ask for a letter to prove they showed up, one agent says.

South Auckland's demand for state housing continues to outstrip supply

Monte Cecilia Housing Trust chief executive Bernie Smith says despite the Government s best efforts south Auckland continues to grapple with a lack of affordable and state housing.
The number of people in south Auckland on the Ministry of Social Development’s Housing Register has grown rapidly since 2018 and not enough new state houses are being built to keep up with demand.
Statistics from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development show the number of state houses available in south Auckland has only increased by 692 homes since September 2018 – from 12,011 properties in September 2018 to 12,703 in September last year.
Meanwhile, the number of applicants in south Auckland on the Ministry of Social Development’s Housing Register has grown from 1931 to 3018 during the same period. ....

A last-minute $30,000 donation from a Tauranga company has helped push the total raised in this year s Christmas foodbank appeal to a record $190,990.
Synergy Technologies donated the money to the Bay of Plenty Times Christmas Appeal, run in partnership with Gilmours Wholesale Food and Beverage Tauriko, on Thursday.
A total of $132,000 in cash had been raised by Friday afternoon, with 29,495 food items worth $58,990. Each food item is valued at $2. ....
