Shreveport Housing Authority to receive 44 emergency housing vouchers

Affordable housing sees change with the creation of Fairfield Estates

View Comments Wednesday marked a momentous moment in Shreveport’s history. The once state-of-the-art Wilkinson Terrace apartments came to the end of their lifetime.  In a ceremony hosted by the Housing Authority of the City of Shreveport (HACS) a celebration of the groundbreaking of Fairfield Estates and the demolition of Wilkinson Terrace was ushered in by HACS CEO Bobby R. Collins and Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins.  Wilkinson Terrace, a 184-unit apartment complex, was completed in 1951 under the Housing Act of 1949. The Housing Act of 1949 was part of President Harry Truman’s Fair Deal domestic legislation. It was a sweeping expansion of the federal role in mortgage insurance and the construction of public housing.

Shreveport s Wilkinson Terrace scheduled for demolition

A Shreveport housing complex that provided assisted housing to residents of Shreveport for 68 years will be demolished and replaced with new housing. The Shreveport Housing Authority of the City of Shreveport is scheduled to demolish Wilkinson Terrace and break ground across the street at what will be the new Fairfield Estates. “This is an exciting time for the community that once housed many families over the years at Wilkinson Terrace,” said Bobby Collins, CEO of the Housing Authority. “As we say goodbye to the old, it is an awesome opportunity to usher in hope for new families who will occupy units at the Fairfield Estates.”
