Cowley Road Carnival will be celebrated city-wide as residents are encouraged to decorate homes as carnival floats or throw street parties. The festivities, which take place on July 4, will be complemented by a repeat of last year’s virtual carnival on music streaming service Mixcloud. There will be also be a live stream of music, performances and parties on YouTube and Facebook from noon to 6pm hosted by the carnival’s creative director Pax Nindi. And the party will continue with DJ sets on Mixcloud throughout the evening. This year’s theme is Mother Earth and Cowley Road Works (CRW), the charity which organises the carnival, is offering among other prizes the best decorated House Float and a special prize for residents who best illustrate the theme.

Like countless festivals across the globe, Fiesta has been in a hazy holding pattern since the COVID-19 pandemic reared its head in early 2020. Last March, the Fiesta San Antonio Commission announced that the 2020 celebration had been rescheduled from April to November due to safety concerns. While animated conversations ensued about a brisk Fiesta leading into the holidays, the postponement amounted to nothing more than wishful thinking. Amusingly, Fiesta diehards had no intention of waiting until November. Instead, they got creative in quarantine and found safe ways to celebrate in April. Folks took to social media and posted lively photos of women in flower crowns, dogs in serapes, doors decorated with wreaths, even chicken on a stick being sold curbside with the hashtag #AtHomeFiesta.
My New Orleans
No one thinks about New Orleans and says, “you know, they lack creativity.” And this past year, in between a global pandemic and natural disasters, New Orleanians did their best to keep themselves entertained and keep the creative juices flowing throughout the city. During one of the city’s creative efforts in response to the cancellation of Carnival 2021, and the emergence of the Krewe of House Floats, a house in the Bywater neighborhood erected in honor of a local celebrity – UPS driver Jason “Jay” Hardesty. Hardesty has become New Orleans and Instagram famous because of his popularity along his route both with the two and four-legged residents. Each Friday, Hardesty features a photo of himself and a dog in the neighborhood he sees while making his deliveries. His warm smile and the adorable pups have made Hardesty famous. This month we learn more about the man behind the #pupsofjay.
