Updated: 11:15 AM EDT April 14, 2021 COLUMBUS, Ohio A pair of Ohio congressmen testified Tuesday on the importance of passing anti-hazing legislation for college campuses and other schools. Rep. Michael Sheehy (D-Oregon) and Rep. Haraz Ghanbari (R-Perrysburg) testified in support of House Bill 205, known as Collin s Law: The Ohio Anti-Bullying and Hazing Act. The bill addressed the issue of school bullying and hazing throughout the state. The legislation is co-sponsored by both congressmen. The hazing death of Bowling Green State University student Stone Foltz last month led to renewed calls for action. “In just over two years, Ohioans mourned the tragic deaths of Collin Wiant and Stone Foltz, both of whom lost their lives as a result of hazing on college campuses, Sheehy said. “No student should have to endure such physical or mental abuse simply to join or continue their membership with a social organization. School assessment test requirements questioned Published by news@presspubli. on Fri, 03/05/2021 - 4:00pm By: Larry Limpf Although the U.S. Department of Education has extended flexibility to schools on K-12 assessment, accountability and reporting requirements for the 2020-2021 school year, a state legislator still questions the need for such testing while the pandemic causes logistical problems for schools systems. Fedor said. “However, I am disappointed that the federal governmen ....
Ohio House panel passes bill that will require school standardized testing, but without sanctions and penalties Laura Hancock, cleveland.com COLUMBUS, Ohio - An Ohio House committee advanced a bill Wednesday that extends deadlines for K-12 standardized tests this spring and removes sanctions and penalties on low-performing schools and districts. House Bill 67 was originally written to instruct the Ohio Department of Education to ask the U.S. education secretary to waive testing this spring, due to the pandemic forcing at-home learning for many Ohio children. Lawmakers passed legislation a year ago to waive last year’s testing. But last week, the administration of President Joe Biden stated that it expected tests to occur, but that it would give permission for the assessments to be offered in a shorter format and at later dates than normal. It expects states to publish school report cards so parents and the public can see the impact on learning du ....
