Utah Legislature announces 20-member redistricting committee. Here's who is on it

SALT LAKE CITY Utah Legislature leaders on Friday revealed the members who will serve on a 20-person committee tasked with helping craft the state s voting boundaries for the next decade.
The group committee is separate from the Utah Independent Redistricting Commission, which was formed earlier this year after it was first created through the passage of 2018 s Proposition 4, and conducted its first meeting earlier this week.
The independent commission is tasked with providing feedback and information to the legislative committee, which, in turn, makes a recommendation to the Utah Legislature about the final voting maps in the state. The maps voted on later this year will include the congressional, legislative and school board districts for the next 10 years. ....

Utahns are split over whether the statewide mask mandate put in place to slow the spread of COVID-19 should end on Saturday, and only a few believe the Utah Legislature’s decision should be up to just elected officials, according to a new Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll.
Results released Thursday showed 44% of Utahns believe the mask mandate should continue beyond the April 10 date set in a new law passed before the 2021 Legislature ended last month, while 20% said the date was reasonable, 14% said it should have been sooner, and 17% said there should have never been a mandate. ....

SALT LAKE CITY Guns once again were a contentious issue on Capitol Hill during the Legislature’s 45-day session that ended March 5, and after several tries through the years, lawmakers succeeded in ending the permit requirement for carrying a concealed weapon in Utah.
HB60 lets any Utah resident who is 21 years or older and can legally possess a firearm to carry their weapon concealed without needing a permit. It received final legislative approval in early February, and Gov. Spencer Cox signed the bill Feb. 15.
During debate on the issue, bill sponsor Rep. Walt Brooks, R-St. George, was skeptical there could be reconciliation between the two sides. ....

The Utah Capitol in Salt Lake City is pictured on Friday, March 5, 2021, the final day of the Utah Legislature’s 2021 general session.
SALT LAKE CITY As the Utah Legislature put finishing touches on the state’s more than $23 billion budget, state leaders repeatedly glowed over what they believe it says about Utah’s standing in a nation that has been gripped by COVID-19 for the past year.
After COVID-19 first touched down in Utah a little over a year ago, the Utah Legislature cut the state’s budget out of fears that the pandemic would send the state’s economy spiraling. ....
