A temporary ban on bailiff-enforced evictions, first introduced in March last year to help renters whose finances had been hit by the pandemic, comes to an end after several extensions. The ban was also intended to prevent a surge in homelessness and the associated financial burden on local authorities, and the Crisis charity’s annual monitor noted the policy’s role in minimising homelessness in 2020. However, charities and public bodies continue to warn about the impact of the ban ending as council budgets remain stretched and rent arrears continue to rise.

Kevin McCarthy has long sought to become the next Republican House Speaker.
He has been a reliable Trump ally and helped engineer the ouster of Liz Cheney from GOP leadership.
Despite his efforts, McCarthy faces skepticism among some caucus members and GOP observers. I m looking forward to being the Speaker in the next Congress, he said.
Democrats currently control the House of Representatives by a slender 219-211 margin, and Republicans, buoyed by redistricting advantages that will play in their favor, sense that the majority they lost after 2018 midterm elections is easily within reach.
