Archer Jr has given assent to the 2021 National Budget which is to the tune of $402,123,046. The budget was passed on December 14, 2020, following a day-long debate in the House of Assembly (HoA), which according to Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) said was “committed to God for assent.” The confirmation for the assent of the 2021 Budget was given via the Official Gazette issued today, December 24, 2020, which states that the budget will come into effect on January 1, 2021. ....

Turnbull (R2) has spoken out against some of the recently introduced policies relating to labour in the Virgin Islands. While making his contribution to the budget debate at the House of Assembly (HoA) on Monday, December 14, 2020, Hon Turnbull said employees are the ones being affected. Some of the policies to renew work permits for expatriates include getting a Certificate of Good Standing from the National Health Insurance (NHI) and Social Security as well as a certificate of earnings from the Inland Revenue Department. ....

DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- Against the backdrop of a Special Sitting by the House of Assembly (HoA) to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the restoration of the Legislature [December 5, 1950] in the Virgin Islands, Speaker of the HoA, Hon Julian Willock made some pointed statements during his announcement in the Legislature. It was at the Fourth Sitting of the Third Session of the Fourth HoA on Friday, December 4, 2020, when the Speaker was asked to share some observations. Hon Willock noted, “we often hear that there are three co-equal branches of Government; the Legislative, the Executive and the Judicial.” The Speaker further highlighted, “In our case, according to the Constitution, the Governor is Head of the Executive Branch, the Speaker is Head of the Legislative and the Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court is the Head of our Judicial Branch.” ....
