To the editor:
During these cold winter days, we need to give thanks for the warm homes most of us enjoy. And, we also need to remember that not all people in Lawrence have that benefit. As winter approached, it was learned that there were more people living outside than existing shelter plans could accommodate. At that point, representatives of Justice Matters and the Coalition for Homeless Concerns met with city leaders. The current Emergency Winter Shelter was organized through those efforts, hosted by the Days Inn and the Super 8 hotels, managed by volunteers from these organizations, and funded by the city. In addition, food and other supplies are being donated daily by local citizens. What an amazing effort by so many concerned citizens! ....

As costs for damages at a hotel-based winter shelter for homeless people have grown to more than $17,000, those running the program say they are taking away second chances for the guests who have been causing the damage.
The city of Lawrence, which is funding the program, coordinated with the faith group Justice Matters and the Coalition for Homeless Concerns to open the overnight drop-in shelter beginning Dec. 23 at the Days Inn, 730 Iowa St. The effort was meant to provide a safe option in cold temperatures for people sleeping outside. The hotel shelter has recently been serving around 100 people per night, and coalition co-chair Johannah Smith said in an email to the Journal-World that a small number of guests with signs of severe mental illness and chronic addiction have violated the shelter rules and that volunteers wer ....

With the help of volunteers, the city of Lawrence will be opening an overnight drop-in shelter that aims to provide a safe option in freezing temperatures for the more than 100 homeless people currently estimated to be sleeping outside.
The city and other partners finalized agreements Wednesday afternoon so that the shelter could open Wednesday night, according to Assistant City Manager Brandon McGuire. McGuire said the city has contracted with Days Inn, 730 Iowa St., to host the shelter and signed an agreement with the volunteer group Lawrence Coalition for Homeless Concerns to operate the shelter. ....
