(Above: ghost forest stump at Seal Rock) These ghost forests are older and much more interesting than those that show year-round at Neskowin. Those at Neskowin are only 2,000 years old, while many of those found around the Newport area right now are 4,000 years or more in age. They are sometimes spooky in appearance, and for their reminder of what climate change is capable of. Then their origin story is a mind-bending trip back in time filled with interesting scientific twists and turns. ....
WILMINGTON For Christian Stoner, his favorite North Carolina beer is the last one he sipped. Originally from London, the trained chef landed stateside and fell into a love affair with craft beer from the Tar Heel State specifically in Raleigh, where he took a job at a neighborhood bottle shop, Hop Yard. That was six-and-a-half years ago. Today, Stoner is the Hop Yard owner, with his wife, Susan Barnes, and a third business partner, Lance Rogers. In January, they expanded their brand to downtown Wilmington, opening a shop at 108 Grace St., the old Bombers Beverage Co. spot. It’s not a far path to walk for Stoner, whose calling is in the hospitality industry. Once a bartender at Hop Yard, Stoner learned about various breweries across the state and the art of crafting tasty beer first-hand. ....

Sands that seemingly go on forever, interspersed by massive rocky blobs or spikes that help create a labyrinth, and that always-engaging ocean and its nearby wildlife. One activity that s coming into focus of late along the entire Oregon coast is the phenomenon of fat tire biking – bikes with wider-than-usual tires that allow you to roam nearly unhindered along the sands and at a quicker pace. It s a new kind of beach adventure, and one the Bandon Visitors Center recently touted, showing off a myriad of ways to dig a bit deeper into beach exploration. ....
