Some hydropower plants located downstream have decided to curtail operations to protect their turbine blades from the high silt content in the Rishiganga river water following the glacier burst and flash floods in Uttarakhand, said two people aware of the development, requesting anonymity.
“Some projects downstream are exercising caution and not allowing the silt-laden water to enter their turbines. This is a standard precautionary measure, said a senior government functionary, one of the two people cited above.

Rescuers Search for Workers Trapped at Hydropower Site in Flood-Hit North India
Rescue workers continue to battle mountains of slush and debris at a hydropower construction site in north India that was damaged by flash floods that have killed at least 11 people.
The rescue team of Indo-Tibetan Border Police is working to clear out a tunnel passage, where it expects more than 30 workers trapped, said Vivek Pandey, the spokesman for the police force. The Tapovan tunnel is the only easy entry point to NTPC Ltd.’s Tapovan Vishnugad project in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand.
The flood has also damaged other parts and entry points to the 520-megawatt electricity project. The rescue team has recovered 11 bodies, the state’s Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said in a tweet earlier today. ....

“Disasters happen when we do something stupid,” said Dr Ravi Chopra, a scientist and director of People’s Science Institute in Uttarakhand, referring to the floods that struck Chamoli district on the morning of February 7.
Twenty-six people have died and at least 170 people are still missing. Rescue operations are still ongoing as 35 workers of the National Thermal Power Corporation remain trapped in a tunnel. The force of the floods led to the destruction of the Rishiganga Power Project and damaged the Tapovan power plant. ....
