Could bamboo be replacing willow when it comes to the future of cricket bats?
Daily Telegraph UK
Few sounds signal the arrival of springtime quite like the crack of leather on willow as the cricket season gets under way.
But in a development destined to send shudders through cricket pavilions around the world, Cambridge University has suggested that cricket bats should actually be made of bamboo.
According to researchers at the Centre for Natural Material Innovation, bamboo cricket bats would be lighter, stronger and offer a larger sweet spot - the point from which the ball achieves maximum acceleration. ....

Bamboo bats could revolutionise cricket: study

LONDON, May 10, 2021 (BSS/AFP) – Cricket is a sport defined by tradition, but change may be in store after research suggested bamboo could be an attractive alternative to willow in the manufacture of bats.
The Cambridge University study said its prototype bamboo bat was cheaper to produce, more sustainable and stronger than traditional willow blades and could grow the game worldwide.
The article, published in the Journal of Sports Engineering and Technology on Sunday, also found the laminated bamboo bat possessed a larger sweet spot, making it “a batsman’s dream”.
Willow trees take 15 years to mature enough to produce cricket bats, whereas bamboo only requires five to six years and abounds in China, South America and southeast Asia as well as cricket-obsessed India. ....

London, May 10 (IANS): The likes of Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and Kane Williamson could well discard their English willow bats for those made from bamboo. British scientists have come up with a research saying that cricket bats made of bamboo are a viable option given that they don t compromise on the sweet spot of traditional willow.
Willow has been the principal material for cricket bats for centuries, said Dr Darshil Shah from the University of Cambridge, who is the co-author of the study.
Despite a good innings, there are problems with the supply of English willow. It takes about 15 years before a tree can be harvested, after which new trees must be planted. Between 15 and 30 per cent of the wood is also wasted during bat production, Dr Shah told The Guardian newspaper in London. ....
