PLAINVILLE — Voters have approved a nearly $1 million spending increase for town government and the school system, though town officials believe they can stave off a tax hike by using reserve funds.
The $23.6 million municipal budget for the next fiscal year was approved Tuesday by 377 voters, with 90 ballots cast in opposition, while the $39.8 million Board of Education budget received 359 votes in favor and 106 votes against. According to the town clerk’s office, only 4 percent of registered voters cast a ballot, which is less than usual. ....

SOUTHINGTON — A 73-year-old local man was killed in a one-car crash on Saturday.
James Dicaprio, of Southington, was driving a GMC Sierra pickup truck when he crashed around 2 p.m. in the area of 1244 Meriden Ave., Lt. Keith Egan said in a statement. Dicaprio was later pronounced dead at a hospital. 
Dicaprio was driving the truck north on Meriden Avenue with a six-month-old Doberman dog, Egan said. The truck left the road, drove across a lawn, struck a chain link fence and ultimately stopped against a Lavorgna Oil truck. The dog appeared uninjured and was taken by Southington Animal Control.  ....

WALLINGFORD — A local man died in a motorcycle crash Sunday night on Old Colony Road, police said Monday. 
The crash occurred around 9 p.m. near Oak Street. The driver of a 1999 Harley Davidson motorcycle, identified as Robert Kelleher, 55, of Wallingford, was pronounced dead at the scene, Sgt. Stephen Jacques said in a press release.  
Kelleher was driving south on Old Colony Road and came upon a slight curve near Oak Street. He drove over the double yellow center lines, across the opposing lane of travel and was ejected from the motorcycle when he struck a metal guardrail, Jacques said.   ....
