Roy Mehta seeks people he photographed in Brent 30 years ago

A Brent-born photographer is seeking people he took pictures of 30 years ago for an exhibition in Willesden next year.
Roy Mehta walked the borough s streets from 1989 to 1993 with his huge camera and was invited to take pictures of Afro-Caribbean and Irish communities engaged in seemingly simple activities at home, in the street and at church.

In 2019 the 52-year-old received a 2020 Culture Fund grant to develop his unique and evocative collection to showcase his art as part of the London Borough of Culture Brent 2020. ....

Exhibition celebrating Gujurati roots opens in Willesden

A free multi-dimensional exhibition is launching in Willesden celebrating Gujurati influences in the UK.
Politician Krupesh Hirani, Neasden Temple head Yogvivek Swami, the actor Bhasker Patel, comedian Parle Patel, 
curator Dr. Sushma Jansari, choreographer Urja Desai Thakore, and the musician Sarathy Korwar all hail from Brent with Gujurati roots.

The exhibition at Willesden Library, in High Road, tells the ‘Gujarati story’ of a successful migration, which has influenced, enriched and shaped the UK. ....

Now she s back, her children attend a local primary, and her brothers Ben and Luc and mum Yvonne are up the road.
Smith describes her teen years as  free range . Hanging around the neighbourhood exploring, going to the posh parts like Hampstead  meeting private school kids, or the other way to West Kilburn or Harlesden. It was an adventure.  
There was rave culture, smoking weed, clubbing in Camden, and seeing Neneh Cherry on TV wearing our clothes and talking our language. We thought we were cool, she smiles.
And there were lies about where you were going, without mobile phones you had to organise it beforehand.. the lies were more complicated… you had to get to the phone before Mum did”.  ....
