University of Glasgow - University news - Rugby legends join large dementia prevention study

Alzheimer’s Society is delighted to announce that former world-leading rugby players, Shane Williams and Ben Kay, have signed up to a large-scale Alzheimer’s Society funded study. The research will look at important and unanswered questions, such as whether elite rugby players show more early warning signs of dementia than the general population, and if so, why this is the case.
Previous research has also shown that professional football players may be at a greater risk of death from Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s Society have provided funding for an informal pilot study involving football players, including Alan Shearer. This is a much-needed starting point looking at football and dementia, hoping to encourage future research to understand this important issue. ....

Cigarettes contain poisonous chemicals such as ammonia which is used to boost the impact of nicotine in them.
Furthermore, cigarette smoke contains high levels of carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide – the chemical used in killing Jews in the gas chambers in Nazi Germany during World War II.
Notwithstanding these facts, cigarette manufacturers asserted that cigarette is safe to smoke.
In 1967, the then US Surgeon, General William Stewart, stated that the hazards of smoking had “gone beyond the probable to the point of demonstrated fact” and in 1976, F. Byrd, President of the American Cancer Society stated that cigarettes should be regarded as ‘unique’ among legal consumer products in that they posed a health hazard even if used “properly and prudently”. ....

A Fife man was pursued by police through the East Neuk of Fife and eventually caught with cannabis.
The 21-year-old accelerated away, speeding into Crail above the 30mph limit.
Hutchison was behind the wheel of a friend’s car and although he claimed at the time he had taken out an insurance policy for that day, police later found no evidence of this. ....

Speed and cannabis
A Fife man was pursued by police through the East Neuk of Fife and eventually caught with cannabis.
The 21-year-old accelerated away, speeding into Crail above the 30mph limit.
Hutchison was behind the wheel of a friend’s car and although he claimed at the time he had taken out an insurance policy for that day, police later found no evidence of this.
Officers chased the former Edinburgh Airport baggage handler through the seaside village, initially losing sight of him but later tracking the vehicle to Castle Street, where it had hit a tree. ....
