More than 800 people were able to get their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine on Wednesday at Gardner-Webb University.
The college hosted a vaccination clinic for students and community members this week, putting shots in the arms of 809 people, 350 of which were students.
It s a good day for us, for our community, said William Downs, Gardner-Webb president.
Gardner-Webb announced its intention to return to a pre-COVID environment as much as possible next school year. Getting students vaccinated, Downs said, is indispensable for that vision.
We ve got to attack this thing aggressively. If we simply waited until July or August as we were poised to open the doors, it would be too late. We ve got to turn the corner right now. This is the day to make that happen, he said. ....

About 350 Gardner-Webb University students signed up for COVID-19 vaccine appointments at its Boiling Springs campus Wednesday afternoon.
The clinic, which the university organized with Cleveland County Public Health, was the first opportunity for students to get the vaccine.
Joao Espinheira is a senior soccer player from Brazil, and he said he wouldn t have been able to get the vaccine in his home country until December 2021, at the earliest.
Things are a bit hard there and to get a chance to take this vaccine as early as April is really important for us to keep our lives going, Espinheira said. Hopefully soon, [my family are] all going to be vaccinated, and we re going to move on. ....

Students compete in state oratorical contest held in Shelby

Shelby American Legion Post 82 Family hosted the 83rd annual State Oratorical Finals competition at the LeGrand Center Sunday.
Four contestants, all winners from their particular regions throughout the state, included Savannah McGlothlin, a sophomore at Burns High, participated. She advanced through local, district, and division competitions to the state finals. The title of Savannah s oration was What Compromise Means to the Constitution.
At Sunday s contest, she was awarded second place, along with a $2,500 scholarship. Other contestants included Emma Hall, who represented Apex American Legion Post 124. Emma took first place in the contest and received a $7,500 scholarship. ....

Gardner-Webb, CCC launch joint nursing program

Officials at Gardner-Webb University and Cleveland Community College recently signed an agreement to establish a transfer admission promise program for nursing students.
The CCC Bridge to Professional Advancement in Nursing Partnership with GWU builds on the “Bulldog Bound: Direct Entry Admission Program,” which the two institutions signed in the fall of 2020.
“I am delighted by the opportunities presented by this new nursing partnership with Cleveland Community College,” said GWU President William Downs. “Gardner-Webb will work to ensure a smooth, seamless, and successful transition for all students wishing to continue their education with us. We anticipate this being a strong and vital pathway for student success.” ....
