Luzerne County bench poised to become evenly split following Tuesday s election

The race for Luzerne County judge has narrowed to three candidates — all of them women — for the November general election, and if two of them prevail the county bench will have an equal number of women and men in 2022 for the first time in history. Former Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis won both a Republican and Democratic nomination in Tuesday’s primary election, unofficial results show. While that would have been a bigger deal when straight-party voting still existed, Salavantis is still the clear front-runner going into the fall, said Ed Mitchell, a local veteran political consultant. “She’s still at an advantage because she got such a good vote from both parties,” Mitchell said. “I’m not going to say she’s a sure thing because nobody knows what will happen in politics.”

Salavantis to resign as district attorney to run for Luzerne County judge

She’s in. Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis ended months of speculation Tuesday by announcing she’s resigning to run for Luzerne County judge this year. The three-term Republican prosecutor plans to seek one of two open seats on the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve the people of Luzerne County as district attorney and I will continue to serve the public interest if elected as judge,” Salavantis said in a news release. Salavantis said she will resign after the nominating petition process is complete. Candidates can start circulating nominating petitions Feb. 16 to get on the ballot for the May 18 primary election. The deadline to file nominating petitions is March 9.
