Personal-care homes bore brunt of COVID's invasion; while many devastated, others have managed to elude the worst


Like a sneak thief in the night, COVID-19 stole into The Convalescent Home of Winnipeg undetected.
No one knows how, exactly, the virus got into the Hugo Street personal-care home; none of the 84 residents or any staff members were showing any symptoms when the first positive case came back on Dec. 6.
But the virus made its presence known with force. Little more than a month later, the numbers tell a frightening tale.
Eighteen of the 84 residents died, the latest a woman in her 60s reported Thursday. Sixty-three residents contracted the virus and have recovered. Three others have somehow managed not to get sick. ....

More COVID-19 outbreaks declared at Winnipeg hospital and health centre

Outbreaks of COVID-19 have been declared at a Winnipeg hospital and health centre in Winnipeg.
On Tuesday, provincial health officials reported an outbreak was declared at the Health Sciences Centre unit GA4, as well as the Riverview Health Centre. Both sites have been moved to the critical or red level on the pandemic response system.
There are currently 17 outbreaks at health-care facilities across the province, 13 outbreaks at assisted living facilities, and 45 outbreaks at personal care homes.
The province announced the outbreak at Tuxedo Villa Extendicare in Winnipeg was declared over as of Tuesday.

The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 12.4 per cent provincially and 12.1 per cent in Winnipeg. As of 9:30am on December 29, 2020, 133 new cases of the virus have been identified, which brings the total number of lab-confirmed cases in Manitoba to 24,385.
Public health officials advise five additional deaths in people with COVID-19 have been reported today including:
a female in her 70s from the Winnipeg health region;
a female in her 80s from the Winnipeg health region, linked to the outbreak at the Holy Family Home;
a male in his 80s from the Winnipeg health region, linked to the outbreak at Oakview Extended Care Facility; ....

Despite another day of lower new case numbers in the province, Manitoba public health officials are urging caution as New Year’s Eve approaches.
The province announced 133 new cases and five new deaths related to COVID-19 on Tuesday, some of the lowest numbers in recent weeks. But despite the downward trends that have been seen as of late, Dr. Jazz Atwal, acting deputy chief provincial public health officer, warned people against congregating for parties later this week.
