In 2007, however, a bill was passed to make Juneteenth a paid holiday once it is federally recognized. 47 states and the District of Columbia recognize Juneteenth as a ceremonial holiday. Texas led the way to make it an official paid holiday for state employees in 1980 and recently New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia followed suit.
But let’s back up! I never learned about June 19, 1865 in school. Sure we were taught about the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves in Confederate states in 1863 but nothing about Galveston, Texas-1865. I thought about this and tried to understand why. 10 facts about Charles Chesnutt, Fayetteville's famous Black writer

Charles Chesnutt (1858-1932) has permanently written Fayetteville into literary history.

Will Capitol Hill riot lead to national recognition of 1898 Wilmington coup?

WILMINGTON – The Jan. 6 insurrection on Capitol Hill awakened an awareness in Americans to the fragility of democracy. But many people didn’t come out of the experience of watching history unfold in real time with an understanding of how to process that stark realization.
In the hours and days after the deadly riot that directly led to the deaths of five people, Americans turned to history to help understand the troubling present through the past – and nothing has educated people about the causes and consequences of an insurrection more than the 1898 Wilmington Massacre.
In the past month, Wilmington’s darkest hour – a racially motivated and murderous attack on the city’s Black community on Nov. 10, 1898 by a mob of white supremacists – has been reported on across the state, country and world. ....
