Esther Lin/SHOWTIME Tonight at 10 pm ET live on Showtime, Luis Nery and Brandon Figueroa headline a three-fight card, with the WBC and WBA “regular” junior featherweight titles on the line. We’ll have live updates for the event, and and all of those, including round-by-round from Wil Esco, will update in this stream: ,c(t.firstChild,i)))})(window); Nery made a somewhat uninspiring debut at 122 lbs last September, not exactly shining but winning the then-vacant WBC belt. Figueroa last fought on the same card, stopping Damien Vazquez in 10. The Nery-Figueroa winner is already set for a unification date with WBO titlist Stephen Fulton Jr in September, which will also air on Showtime. ....
Soto (19-1, 13 KO) simply cannot have an easy title fight, it seems, and the 24-year-old Mexican warrior is proving to be consistently great television the last couple of years. None of the controversy here has anything to do with Soto, but everything to do with a Texas referee whose career has been a lightning rod for criticism, none other than Laurence Cole. Cole stepped in at 2:44 of the ninth round to stop the fight, which basically nobody agreed with on TV or in our live discussion. Our unofficial scores at the time of the stoppage were 78-74 Soto (Wil Esco) and 77-75 Takayama (myself, and I’m noting our differences here so you don’t yell at anyone but me for what was very enthusiastically a questionable bit of scoring). ....
There was some question about how the fight was being scored, with rounds along the way that could have gone to Saunders (30-1, 14 KO) on activity and some solid, clever work, or to Canelo (56-1-2, 38 KO) on his heavier power shots, largely to the body but obviously a couple good ones upstairs, too. Here are the official cards at the time of the stoppage: As you can see there, judges Glenn Feldman and Max DeLuca had it 78-74 for Canelo, and judge Tim Cheatham had it slightly closer, 77-75 for the new, further unified champion. Scoring unofficially for Bad Left Hook, myself and Wil Esco both had it 77-75 for Canelo after the eight rounds. ....
Caleb Plant vs Caleb Truax Round 1: Plant lands a jab to the body right away, then another moments later. Plant misses on a jab upstairs this time. Truax tries to come forward but walks into more body shots from Plant. Lead left hook lands for Plant, who just misses on a follow up body shot. Plant lands another lead left hook as Truax steps in. Truax lands a jab upstairs but Plant comes right back to the body and then gets back on his own stick. Right to the body lands for Truax. Left to the body lands clean for Plant. Left hook lands for Plant at the end of the round. ....
Angelo Leo vs Stephen Fulton Round 1: Both fighters come out throwing right away. Fulton throws a jab and Leo immediately gets in close and smothers Fulton. Leo presses forward and pops a jab that doesn’t land clean, but then lands a jab to the body. Fulton jabs upstairs but Leo blocks it pretty well. Left hook lands to the body for Fulton. Now Fulton lands a jab to the body and then a looping hook to the head. Right hand lead lands well for Leo. Double jab lands for Leo this time. Another jab comes from Leo but he doesn’t land this one. Fulton gets on his jab and lands a couple of his own. Both fighters have taken turns landing. Hard left hook lands to the body for Fulton. Jab lands for Fulton and Leo is bleeding over his left eye. Close round but I’ll give this one to Fulton for drawing first blood. ....
