SINGAPORE, July 22 Two men who illegally kept exotic animals as pets and paid to smuggle yet more creatures across the Causeway were fined in court yesterday (July 21).
Nonis Randy Amin Nonis Amran, a self-professed animal lover and volunteer with the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres), was fined a total of S$8,000 (RM24,801).
The 31-year-old had kept two central bearded dragons and a green iguana in his flat, and abetted the importation of an Argentine black-and-white tegu into Singapore via Woodlands Checkpoint. ....

The sale and slaughter of live turtles and frogs at wet markets in Singapore have been banned since December.
The move came after a joint appeal by wildlife rescue group Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres) and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to raise the safety and welfare standards of live animals sold for food. ....

Critically-endangered Sunda pangolins are native to Singapore and the region.
Globally, they are mainly threatened by illegal wildlife trade. However, roads rather than poachers are the biggest enemy of pangolins in Singapore.
There may be a record number of pangolin roadkills in Singapore this year due to a few possible reasons. However, experts are still optimistic about the future of pangolins in Singapore if we keep up with our conservation efforts.
