Addressing the party’s Mashonaland West provincial coordinating committee ((PCC) members in Chinhoyi weekend, Zanu PF secretary for security, Lovemore Matuke said the ruling party was under attack from naysayers using various non-State actors to destabilise the country’s peace and security. Matuke alleged the National Democratic Institute (NDI) in January this year held a meeting with hostile CSOs and pledged to provide funding towards programmes to fuel anarchy in the country in a bid to overthrow President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration. ....

By James Muonwa SELF-STYLED ‘rent lords’ aligned to the ruling Zanu PF party are said to be responsible for the lawlessness prevailing in the country’s informal sector, where they are collecting hefty tax-free rentals and levies from impoverished vendors and hawkers. The unscrupulous political actors name-drop in their machinations that have seen some writing their own “rags-to-riches” stories overnight after grabbing and subleasing vending spaces. Zanu PF politicians reportedly use party youths to claim vending territories where they allocate stalls for vendors to operate from for stipulated fees, which are way above what Harare City Council (HCC) charges. This came out during a zoom meeting convened last week by the Vendors Initiative for Social and Economic Transformation (VISET) under the topic; “An Update of Renovation and Development of Satellite Markets.” ....
By James Muonwa THE majority of tuckshops targeted for demolition in Mbare by the Harare City Council HCC next week are run by Congolese citizens, it has emerged. Early this week, the local council issued a warning to all tuckshop owners and vendors operating in the capital city to remove their structures before 18 February or they will be targeted for demolition after that date. According to HCC communications manager Michael Chideme, it has been discovered that a lot of the operators of tuckshops at the lucrative Mbare Musika Market were Congolese nationals. However, the HCC spokesperson said the directive to pull down the illegal structures should not be construed as a xenophobic attack. ....
