Mass volunteer effort in Rapid City yields tons of trash during cleanup week

KNBN NewsCenter1 April 27, 2021 Rapid City Public Works RAPID CITY, SD It’s enough to make even a singing purple dinosaur named Barney beam with pride. Local residents and volunteer teams turned out in a big way last week for the annual Citywide Cleanup Week, picking up trash and items around Rapid City. More than 1500 volunteers, comprising 160 teams, fanned out across the community, mostly on Saturday during Community Cleanup Day. The annual event was cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year marked the 50th year the city has observed a community-wide cleanup event. And holding true to one of Barney’s signature songs, it seemed like ‘everybody, everywhere’ around Rapid City was doing their share to ‘clean up, clean up’. Volunteers picked up trash and discarded items, combing through fields, ravines, ditches, hillsides, trees and bushes; and along fence lines, bike paths, trails and creek shorelines.
