RAPID CITY, SD It’s enough to make even a singing purple dinosaur named Barney beam with pride.
Local residents and volunteer teams turned out in a big way last week for the annual Citywide Cleanup Week, picking up trash and items around Rapid City. More than 1500 volunteers, comprising 160 teams, fanned out across the community, mostly on Saturday during Community Cleanup Day. The annual event was cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year marked the 50th year the city has observed a community-wide cleanup event.
And holding true to one of Barney’s signature songs, it seemed like ‘everybody, everywhere’ around Rapid City was doing their share to ‘clean up, clean up’. Volunteers picked up trash and discarded items, combing through fields, ravines, ditches, hillsides, trees and bushes; and along fence lines, bike paths, trails and creek shorelines.

RAPID CITY, S.D. Rapid City’s ‘Name The Garbage Truck’ contest enters its voting phase this week with the public getting the chance to weigh in and make selections to name nine City garbage trucks.
Last month, the City’s Solid Waste Division requested submissions from the public for the contest and officials reported an overwhelming response. By this weekend’s submission deadline, 315 names were submitted.
The public can submit votes through Sunday, May 9. The City will post online reminders to vote, but votes can only be cast by going to the survey monkey website.
The nine entries receiving the most votes will be the winners. The winning selections and submitters will be announced during National Public Works Week May 16-22. Winners will be invited to the Rapid City Landfill in June to place magnetic signs on the City’s garbage trucks. Contest prizes are being provided by the Rapid City Parks and Recreation Department and the Rushmo
