Every year the world gets a little gayer or so you’d think given the growing list of queer films available to anyone who subscribes to a streaming service.
Gone are the days when one had to settle for a tiny category on Netflix, or limited offerings in a badly lit section of the nearest video rental store. Instead, we find ourselves awed by the outpour of new films highlighting queer voices throughout genres, from rom-coms to thrillers. ....

Eyes wide open: Race, class and gender on pandemic TV – Anglican Journal

Sometimes I wish my eyes hadn’t been opened
Sometimes I wish I could no longer see
All of the pain and the hurt and the longing of my
Sisters and me as we try to be free
Once your eyes have been opened to issues of race, class and gender, you see them everywhere, from the street to the screen. Through this lockdown, many of us are spending our evenings at home watching films or series on streaming services. Many of these deal overtly or subtly with issues of race, gender and class, and can prompt us to a deeper exploration of our assumptions in a world dominated by white men. Here is a brief selection of some I’ve found especially noteworthy. ....

Funny that way - Dallas Voice

Funny that way
Set against Sri Lanka’s 26-year civil war, ‘
Funny Boy’ holds messages for today
Gregg Shapiro | Screen Savor
Based on the acclaimed 1994 novel of the same name by gay writer Shyam Selvadurai (who co-wrote the screenplay), Funny Boy (Array) is directed by Deepa Mehta (who co-wrote the screenplay with Selvadurai). Mehta, who is straight, is no stranger to queer material, having written and directed the award-winning 1996 lesbian feature Fire.
Set in Colombo, Sri Lanka, during the mid-1970s and early 1980s, especially turbulent years leading up to the beginning of the civil war between the Tamils and the Sinhalese that lasted for 26 years, Funny Boy is timely for a variety of reasons. At a time when tensions are particularly high here in the U.S., with our own civil war seemingly looming daily, Funny Boy serves as a kind of warning. Equally important is the central theme of sexuality and acceptance that propels the story. ....

Film of Shyam Selvadorai's Funny Boy – The Island

Here is another film success story and this time it is more relevant to us Sri Lankans, so celebration is called for; any optimistic silver lining being welcome in these dark days of fear of infection. I speak of the release, attracting the world’s art and film attention, of Shyam Selvadorai’s early, acclaimed 1994 autobiographical novel ‘Funny Boy’ which won the Books in Canada First Novel Award. Direction is by famed, many awards winning Indian Canadian Deepa Mehta who is familiar with Sri Lanka having filmed the second of her elements trilogy ‘Water’ with a few Sri Lankan actors and discovering a fine child to play the pivotal role of the very young widow in the story. She had to shift to our country due to protests in India and even the burning of the sets that had been erected for filming. Producers are her husband, David Hamilton and Howard Shore. Filming was on location in Sri Lanka in 2020, completed around October. Shyam wrote the film script and many of the a ....
