Kittery Planning Board reviews distances of recreational cannabis site

KITTERY Before the town s retail marijuana ordinance blazes forward, town staff will review the distances between cannabis businesses to aid the Planning Board in crafting its proposal. Planning Board Vice Chair Karen Kalmar said Thursday she believes it’s a “legitimate strategy” to limit marijuana businesses by distance in town zones that are primarily for residential development. “Is anyone (as) concerned as I am that we might have a glut of one kind of development that might undercut our desire to have residential development in the area?” she asked. Discussed since the winter, a retail ordinance would allow up to five marijuana retail establishments to be located in Kittery’s C-1, C-2, C-3 and mixed-use zoning districts by special exception.

Recreational marijuana sales in Kittery face opposition from medicinal providers

KITTERY, Maine - Local medical marijuana providers are speaking loud and clear - a potential Kittery retail marijuana ordinance could burn their business prospects should it be adopted. “The existing medical marijuana home businesses are locally-owned, locally-funded and locally staffed,” said Clay Wyman, a self-described caregiver  at Southern Maine Apothecary at 114 State Road. “In contrast, the recreational marijuana market is dominated by large national and multinational companies that distribute their profits to Wall Street and/or out-of-state investors.” The second installment of a cannabis-centric public hearing before Kittery’s Planning Board took place Thursday night, this time bringing out a heavier swing by the ordinance’s opponents than its proponents and retail hopefuls.

Marijuana shops in Kittery: Public hearing raises issues in town

KITTERY, Maine  The image of how five marijuana shops would look in town became less hazy Thursday night. “The modern and upscale feel of my retail store will blend seamlessly with other businesses such as Beach Pea, Terra Cotta, Carl’s (Meat Market) and the Golden Harvest as well as the other retail stores and restaurants already established in the neighborhood,” according to Julie Cutting-Kelley of Green Blossoms LLC. Several business hopefuls began advocating for retail cannabis in town zoning districts during a town Planning Board public hearing, during which owners of non-marijuana businesses argued the impact on them was not being considered.

Sweet Dirt celebrates completing Maine s largest cannabis greenhouse

Portsmouth Herald ELIOT, Maine – Sweet Dirt, a Maine-based, vertically integrated cannabis company, recently announced the completion of its 32,800-square-foot cannabis greenhouse. Located in Eliot, adjacent to the company’s manufacturing site and medical cannabis store, the new greenhouse – the largest cannabis greenhouse in Maine – was completed in just under one year. A ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house for state and local officials, environmental leaders and other guests was held on Thursday, Jan. 21. With eight flower and propagation rooms, two drying rooms, and an operations support facility, the greenhouse will employ 25-30 full-time cultivation, pest management and irrigation specialists and yield up to 12,000 pounds of cannabis annually. This state-of-the-art hybrid greenhouse helps to maximize efficiency by utilizing the greatest light source available (the sun) and insulative building materials to help maintain interior environmental conditions.
