The TWU’s national secretary, Michael Kaine
The TWU has reiterated calls for the return of JobKeeper payments for aviation workers after Qantas warned it may have to bring back stand-downs if lockdowns persist.
The union’s national secretary, Michael Kaine, said, “Many aviation workers are very worried about what is going to happen with their jobs. They need a guarantee from the federal government that will be able to support their families if there are mass stand downs.”
It comes after Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce appeared to lobby for the return of JobKeeper in an email to staff and Rex announced it would cut or reduce services on Wednesday night.

JobKeeper replacement for aviation industry will not protect jobs
An initiative to replace the JobKeeper wage subsidy announced by the Morrison Government for the aviation industry today, with no strings attached to protect jobs, will go straight to employers.
The scheme is intended to replace JobKeeper – a wage subsidy won by unions that has been keeping aviation workers in jobs since the beginning of the pandemic. But the package – the result of discussions between QANTAS Group and the Morrison Government will not be enough for many workers.
The ACTU and aviation unions are appealing to the Morrison Government to introduce Aviation Keeper, which would ensure aviation jobs are secured, as well as implement strict salary capping for executives, banning bonuses and dividends, and ban the outsourcing of jobs overseas.

After much anticipation, the federal government has finally released the details of its new $1.2 billion support package for Australia’s tourism industry.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that while Australia’s economy had recovered 85 per cent of its fall from COVID-19, the next step in the government’s National Economic Recovery Plan would target the businesses, workers and regions still doing it tough.
Morrison said the package’s mix of half-price airline tickets, cheap loans for businesses and direct support to keep planes in the air, and airline workers in their jobs, would be a bridge to a more normal way of life for Aussies.
