The truth about racial inequalities and COVID-19 - and what should be done to address the long-term impacts

It didn’t take long for the world to feel the pandemic’s impact on existing inequalities. A year after the arrival of COVID-19, however, and many of those outcomes have proven to be far more wide-reaching and devastating than anticipated, especially where race and ethnicity is concerned.
As more research emerged over the course of the past year, the role that structural racism has played in furthering these inequalities has become increasingly apparent. Vaccine mistrust among black and Asian communities has been revealed to be far more complex than initially portrayed by the government. The limitations of also looking at data through a “BAME” lens have been exposed, with calls for less generalised information about COVID-19-related outcomes for wildly disparate and varied ethnic groups. And within the youth labour market, black people have been hit the hardest by COVID-19 restrictions. ....

We need to tackle head on Covid vaccine uptake in BAME groups

Research shows that concerns over taking the vaccine are higher in some, but not all, BAME groups
THERE’S been a lot of talk about the anti-vax brigade, alongside mask refusal and lockdown denial from all the usual moaning suspects that get far too much oxygen in the British media.
Now the British Red Cross is taking this misinformation and subjective nonsense head on, promoting a positive nationwide campaign to tackle the real problem of vaccine hesitancy in the UK, particularly among BAME communities.
Hesitancy to take the vaccine is a serious matter. High population take-up is essential in helping us overcome Covid-19 alongside continuing social-distancing measures, levels and tiers systems – anything less will threaten the pandemic response and could keep us in repeated lockdown limbo as well as a continued threat to life. With so much misinformation flying around and in some cases suggestions that anti-vaxxers are deliberately targeting vulnerable groups ....

London Member of Parliament David Lammy, who took part in the politicians’ video, said he’s not surprised by the survey findings because he’s seen this hesitancy in his own family.
“I had been in touch with relatives who are in their 80s and 70s to ask them if they had taken the vaccine and many of them were coming back and saying, no, they weren t sure they wanted it, Lammy said.
Lammy’s uncle died in New York last year after contracting the coronavirus. The lawmaker watched the funeral over Zoom, which he said was deeply depressing. And his uncle is just one of many people he knows who has died from the disease. ....

There have been growing concerns about the uptake of Covid vaccines among black, Asian and other ethnic minority communities in the UK.
Some fear vaccine hesitancy could be increased by false and misleading information shared online. We ve been investigating some examples.
Human guinea pig claims
The comments, which led to an angry response on social media, fuelled existing concerns that Africans could be used as guinea pigs for a future Covid-19 vaccine.
But that didn t happen - vaccine trials got under way in sites spread around the world. The Oxford University vaccine team, for example, initiated testing in the UK and later in Brazil and South Africa. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine had clinical trial sites in Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Turkey, South Africa and the US. ....
