Gov. Edwards rejects calls for firings at LSU

Governor Edwards reiterated his support for LSU’s decision not to fire anyone in the wake of the Husch Blackwell report detailing widespread mishandling of sexual misconduct cases.
Edwards said it’s clear that a number of former LSU employees should’ve been fired back in 2013, 14 and 15, but those employees aren’t at LSU anymore.
“If you look at the Husch Blackwell Report I don’t think there is any doubt that the most egregious behavior was by those who are no longer at LSU and have not been for many years,” said Edwards. ....

BATON ROUGE State senators on Thursday took turns blasting LSU for its failures on sexual assaults at a hearing at which not a single LSU official listed on the agenda was in attendance.
The Senate Select Committee on Women and Children had called for the testimony of nine LSU employees and one attorney at Taylor Porter, a Baton Rouge law firm that represents LSU, on how it has handled sexual assault complaints involving football players and others. ....

BATON ROUGE, La. As the state’s flagship university deals with the continued controversy over how school administrators handled claims of sexual misconduct and alleged Title IX violations, Governor John Bel Edwards said change must happen. 
“I support mandatory reporting for Title IX violations related to sexual assault and sexual harassment by higher education mandatory reporters,” said Edwards.  ....

BATON ROUGE  Women state lawmakers who have been holding hearings into Louisiana State University’s years-long, systemic mishandling of sexual misconduct and violence complaints came to a sobering conclusion during their third such hearing Thursday.
LSU officials are done talking.
As a result, the legislators shifted their focus from accountability for officials who contributed to the scandal to at least 12 newly introduced bills that would address problems at the heart of it.
“We’re limited, but we feel the burden,” said Sen. Beth Mizell, vice chair of the Senate Select Committee on Women and Children, the group that has been hosting the hearings. “We don t want to just slap you on the hand we want this done. And I think maybe the greatest help we can give you is by watchful oversight and engagement.” ....
