ZOOM to the rescue again! As in 2020, the last meeting of the Rotary year on June 28 had to take place online. Outdoors and suitably socially distanced, earlier in the day retiring Winchester Rotary president Richard Spalding handed the chain of office to Ian Valentine. The role of president elect has been passed to Deborah Macartney. A short video was made and shown at the evening Zoom meeting. The pandemic greatly curtailed normal club activities over the 2020-21 Rotary year, but where there’s a will there’s a way and Richard’s two lead charities (Trinity Winchester and Winchester Churches Nightshelter) benefited from a number of innovative fundraising initiatives and each charity received £8,500. ....
WINCHESTER ROTARY SUPPORTS WinACC PROJECTS WITH £5,000 DONATION DOMINIC Hiscock (Winchester Rotary’s Environment Team Leader), accompanied by club president Richard Spalding, met Winchester Action on Climate Change (WinACC)’s Jo Crocker at Winchester University to present a cheque for £5,000. With effect from July 1, environment protection becomes a global area of focus for Rotary International. WinACC has launched a network to stimulate and support people across the Winchester District to take action on the climate emergency in their community. Rotary s gift will make a big contribution to this, helping community groups to exchange ideas, share projects and ways of working, and do more to reduce the impact of global warming. Rotary members will also be linked to local projects, so that they can play a part close to where they live. ....
WINCHESTER Rotary’s latest ‘Georgia Scholar’ is Isla Bone. Isla, who has lived in Winchester all her life, has just completed her A Levels at Peter Symonds College. Last year’s programme had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Isla is due to travel to the University of Georgia, Athens, USA on August 1. The Georgia Rotary Student Programme (GRSP) set up by Rotary Clubs in Georgia, allows students from all over the world to take up an ambassadorial scholarship, providing they meet certain criteria, and are recommended by a Rotary club in their home country. On June 23 Isla met the Mayor Cllr Vivian Achwal, at Abbey House. ....
Danny Horgan with his badge LOCAL Scouts have rarely been able to meet over the past year – but that has not stopped them from running charity events online. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have joined forces with the city s Rotary Club to raise money for Winchester Hospice. Each young person has been set the challenge to design a fundraiser to raise at least £30. On completion, they will be awarded the Hospice Challenge badge, unique to the district. A Winchester Rotary spokesperson said: With lockdown, the project has been slow to take off but two local Scout Groups in particular, the 3rd and 6th Winchester, have embraced the project. ....
