Winchester High School takes next step toward new identity

Wicked Local
On July 28, 2020, Winchester Public Schools and the School Committee voted unanimously to no longer use Native American or Alaskan lingo as school mascots and to have Superintendent Judy Evans come up with a transitional plan for the new Winchester High School logo and/or mascot.
During the Feb. 23 virtual meeting of the Winchester School Committee, a new identity was recommended by the Winchester High School Rebranding Committee: the Red & Black.
Over 75 people volunteered to be part of the process and helped create the Winchester High School Rebranding Committee was created.
“I could not be prouder of these kids, as well as the adults on the Committee,” Winchester High School Principal Dennis Mahoney said. “We love the idea of honoring the past, honoring the history because it respects a lot of people and what they did before us.” ....

WFEE Academy extended into March, remains free for Winchester families

Wicked Local
A pilot project designed to provide meaningful online programming for elementary students in Winchester will be extended after the Winchester School Committee unanimously voted to accept a $24,000 grant during its Feb. 23 virtual meeting.
The Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence (WFFE) Academy was a big hit with hundreds of parents as 97% of parents who responded to a survey about the Academy rated their family’s experience good or terrific.
“It is clear that we are all struggling with the balance between too much screen time and providing joyful, exciting experiences to our children,” WFEE Executive Director Caren Connelly said. “We wish these offerings could be in person but that isn’t possible. But, there is significant interest in the programming that we provided. We filled nearly 2,000 class slots with students attending kindergarten through fifth grade.”  ....

Winchester School Committee eyes Braintree superintendent as interim

Another characteristic Committee members noted was Hackett s ability to put others at ease.
I liked his sense of humor, Committee member Zeina Marchant said. I thought that made the interview go quickly and really seemed to just bring out the best in all of us.
His experience helping guide a Massachusetts school district through the COVID-19 pandemic was also key.
Helping people get through the pandemic is not just about helping them get through school, School Committee member Michelle Bergstrom said,  but helping them get through the pandemic.
Hackett was one of two finalists discussed by Committee members. The other candidate was Dr. Mark McLaughlin, a superintendent in Merrimack, New Hampshire. The finalists were vetted by a screening committee consisting of Laurie Kirby, Jen Elineema, Ellen Whittemore, Bergstrom and Bolognese. ....
