Review of the Year – 2020 in Winchester | Hampshire Chronicle

Here is the second part of our Review of the Year:
JULY
A WINCHESTER woman has been crowned the winner of this year’s Great British Sewing Bee.
Clare Bradley beat stiff competition and impressed judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant to be awarded the title in the BBC One show.
Upon being announced as the winner, she said: “I feel really surprised. Crikey. I do hold myself to high standards and because other things I have gone in for are things I have trained for like exams and more exams - this was something I did for fun.”
The streets are bustling, the shops are filled – and for the first time in 13 weeks, Winchester’s pubs, cafes and restaurants are open, but not as we have known it. ....

Pupils celebrate Christmas differently due to coronavirus

PILGRIMS School has been forced to celebrate the run up to Christmas creatively this year.
Due to the pandemic, pupils are unable to follow their traditions – or at least not in their usual fashion.
However the show must go on and the annual nativity will be held on Zoomed, with performers streaming their parts from individual classrooms.
The cathedral carol service will also happen virtually, and head of music Russell du Plessis has ensured that all 240 children will be involved.
Carols have been recorded in year group bubbles and will be pieced together.
Lucy Brown of the school said: It’s a very different run up to Christmas at school this year; the pandemic has forced us to come up with some fairly creative solutions. ....

Hannah Shergold artwork in Winchester High Street

Hannah Shergold has converted the old Edinburgh Woollen Mill shop in Winchester High Street into a gallery.
She is using it to sell and exhibit her artwork, which she has been working on since leaving the Armed Forces in 2018.
She has since raised more than £150,000 and her donations have included £50,000 for the UK Invictus Games team, £65,000 for the Born Free Foundation and in 2020 almost £40,000 for Prince William s conservation charity, Tusk.
A spokesperson said: Hannah s work is created in vivid, brightly coloured oil paints using only palette knives and her signature method of dragging the paint through itself.
Her technique uses abstract shapes and geometric lines to create incredible movement, bring her wildlife paintings to life with an almost three-dimensional quality. ....
