JULY
A WINCHESTER woman has been crowned the winner of this year’s Great British Sewing Bee.
Clare Bradley beat stiff competition and impressed judges Esme Young and Patrick Grant to be awarded the title in the BBC One show.
Upon being announced as the winner, she said: “I feel really surprised. Crikey. I do hold myself to high standards and because other things I have gone in for are things I have trained for like exams and more exams - this was something I did for fun.”
The streets are bustling, the shops are filled – and for the first time in 13 weeks, Winchester’s pubs, cafes and restaurants are open, but not as we have known it. ....

THEY are the Winchester district heroes who have been recognised for their efforts.
The 2021 list of New Year s Honours has been released and it features 11 people who have contributed to the district.
Whether it is in the field of health, media or community service, they have all played their part – especially in what has been a difficult year.
They are:
Vivien Loveday, 75, of Bishop’s Waltham, is awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the community.
For the past 40 years she has run the Bishops Waltham Gateway Club, which helps people with learning disabilities take part in leisure, social and creative activities. ....

Andover's award recipients in the New Year's Honours List


OBE
The OBE, or Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, is awarded by the monarch on behalf of the government to recognise those who have made major contributions at a local level, or whose work has gained a national profile.
This year, there was one recipient from Andover and its surroundings.
Dr Phillippa Spencer, from Stockbridge, is the senior principal statistician at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory. She was given her OBE for services to defence, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.
She said: “I am genuinely overwhelmed by the honour. The award recognises not only me, but an incredible team of people who provide vital support to so many collective efforts. I am beyond happy to have been nominated.” ....
