Girl Scout Troop 69 founded Children's Museum of Oak Ridge

Oakridger
To the Editor:
I wanted to respond to the letter to the editor by Eileen Neiler published in the July 15 edition of The Oak Ridger. Eileen was absolutely correct that Girl Scout Troop 69, under the leadership of Joyce Maienschien, were the founders of the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge (CMOR). The history of the Museum can be found on the CMOR website (childrensmuseumofoakridge.org).
As Selma Shapiro’s daughter and project lead for the Alvin Weinberg Archive, I want to express my appreciation and gratitude to Girl Scout Troop 69 for having the vision and passion to start a small museum in the Library of the old Jefferson Junior High School. Without that simple start, my mother wouldn’t have had the amazing “second act” of her life, and the city of Oak Ridge wouldn’t have this treasure of a Museum for the last 48 years.  As it states on the CMOR website, “Selma was the driving force behind the Museum’s growth for 31 years, and her vision made ....

Knoxville Utilities Board, KUB, broadband service: Answering questions

What area will KUB s broadband service cover?
The broadband network is being built in the same area as KUB s electricity service area. If you get an electricity bill from KUB, you will eventually have access to the service. If you don t, you will not be able to get the service. That s because of a Tennessee state law that prevents public utilities from expanding beyond their electrical footprint.
You ll know when they re coming to your neighborhood because KUB will be publishing their plans and advertising as they go.
What kind of internet service is this?
KUB is building a fiber optic broadband network. Unlike other internet service like DSL or cable-based internet, fiber optic networks don t use copper lines and are capable of transmitting a large amount of data very quickly.  ....

Lack of health care drives down East Tennessee COVID vaccinations

I m seeing that a lot, said Pierce.
Individual attitudes regarding the COVID-19 vaccine are important but less important than the physical barriers to health care.
These trends point to an all-too familiar problem. East Tennessee’s unequal distribution of health care resources and infrastructure which already damage the health of Tennesseans here in innumerable ways hurt even more in a global pandemic.
Addressing these inequalities will require a multipronged approach in the short term and investment in the health of vulnerable communities in the long term, experts say.
Bringing down barriers
People in rural or vulnerable counties are at greater risk of living far from emergency care centers and overall have less access to primary care. ....

This week in COVID-19: This is the price of a politicized pandemic

Nashville Tennessean
“This week in coronavirus” is a weekly column that summarizes Tennessee headlines about the pandemic and COVID-19 vaccines. If you can’t follow the rapid-fire virus news every day, this column will catch you up.
We were always expected to hit a vaccination plateau, but this feels more like a cliff.
The number of Tennesseans getting their first coronavirus vaccinations fell by 58% over the past two weeks, dramatically slowing the pace by which the state protects itself from the pandemic, according to vaccine data from the Tennessee Department of Health.
In a seven-day span that ended Thursday, about 79,000 Tennesseans received either a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or the first dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. ....
