The COVID-19 pandemic comprises two crises at the same time: one of health, and one of race.
Death rates from COVID-19 are 3.6 times higher for Blacks than whites. These racial health disparities cannot be fully explained by socioeconomic status (SES) measures like education, income or affluence. One example is Dr. Susan Moore a 52-year-old Black physician who died of COVID-19 at an Indiana hospital three weeks ago. While many names of those lost to COVID-19 will fade over time, I want you to remember Dr. Moore, not only for her service to her patients, but also for her courage to call out racism in the face of her own mortality. ....

INDIANAPOLIS A central Indiana family is mourning the loss of a mother who documented insufficient treatment at a Carmel hospital before her death.
Dr. Susan Moore tested positive for COVID-19 on Nov. 29, according to a Dec. 4 Facebook post, where she documented her experience. Moore said she had a respiratory rate in the 30s, a heart rate in the 150s and a fever of 101.5. For reference, a normal resting respiratory rate for an adult is between 12 and 16 breaths per minute, and a normal heart rate is typically between 60 and 100 beats per minute, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. ....

Black Doctor Who Chronicled Battle With COVID-19 Endured Racism from The Hospital Team

Dr. Susan Moore from Indianapolis tested positive for COVID-19 on November 29th. She later succumbed to the virus on December 20 after reportedly saying she had to beg for proper medication.
Dr. Moore threw a bombshell of allegations at the Indiana University North Hospital, where she claimed to have been denied additional doses of such a crucial COVID-19 treatment as Remdesivir. She also claims to have been sent home while she still felt ill.
In a Facebook post, Dr. Moore wrote, “I had to beg to get the Remdesivir because Dr. Bannec said my chest x-ray was normal. I then had to beg for a CT of my chest, which I finally got and it showed large mediastinal lymphadenopathy right lower lobe infiltrate in a new left lower lobe infiltrate.” ....
