Retired Norwin teacher loved traveling, going to Olympics

Retired Norwin High School teacher Leslie “Les” M. Harvath had a lifelong love for the game of baseball, from playing on a Little League championship team to starring for the Norwin Knights and Duquesne Dukes that led to a tryout with the Pittsburgh Pirates and then imparting his knowledge of the game by coaching his alma mater for more than 20 years.
He loved to play baseball and lived just “400 feet from home plate” at his neighborhood ballfield, said his son, Schuyler Harvath of Myrtle Beach, S.C. ....

Funeral services for 66-year-old Steven Metz of Keswick will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 23 at Snyder and Hollenbaugh Funeral and Cremation Services of Riverside.  Burial will be in St. Vincent Cemetery with military rites provided by Riverside V.F.W. Post 6414.  Visitation will be Friday, January 22 at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with an 8:00 p.m. prayer service.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Keswick First Responders or the Keswick Fire Department.  Sympathy notes may be left for the Metz family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.

Belfast Garden Club celebrates 20 years of book donations

One of the many ways the Belfast Garden Club contributes to the community is through their annual donation of horticultural and environmental books to the Belfast Free Library. Sometimes the books cover scientific topics, such as fungi and climate change, while others are how-to in nature.
 
“Children’s books on these topics are hard to find, but 41 books have been donated so far,” said the Club, in a news release.
 
While 126 adult books have been placed, the actual number is much higher, according to Allison Beards, Club Historian. She says additional books over the years have been donated as member memorials.   ....
