Vincent Oakes, artistic director of the Chattanooga Boys Choir and Director of Choral Music at The Baylor School was awarded the 2021 Belz-Lipman Award for Excellence in Holocaust Education. Mr. Oakes was one of four recipients from across the state identified by the Tennessee Holocaust Commission for this honor.
Mr. Oakes was nominated for the award by the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga, with whom the Chattanooga Boys Choir has prepared several programs in observance of Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day). This year’s observance, prepared and performed virtually, can be viewed at www.chattanoogaboyschoir.org. In addition to preparing their repertoire, the choristers reviewed music, stories and poetry emanating from concentration camps and visited with music scholars and authors on the subject.  ....

Baylor Fine Arts Department Collaborates On Please Stay Video

Inspired by the commemoration of Mental Health Awareness week on Baylor s campus earlier this semester, students in the fine arts department collaborated on the presentation of the work Please Stay by composer Jake Runestad.
Written in 2017, this piece is described by the composer as “an anthem for hope an attempt to destigmatize mental illness and challenge all of us to support those who are dealing with depression and thoughts of suicide.  
Members of the Concert Choir under the direction of Vincent Oakes prepared a virtual recording of the song, with students recording their individual parts at their homes due to the current pandemic restrictions around singing on campus. ....

Chattanooga Boys Choir Releases Virtual Holiday Performance With Artistic Partners

Following a challenging fall semester due to circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chattanooga Boys Choir and several community partners combined to create and release a production of choral and orchestral music and dance that they hope will brighten the holidays for area residents. 
Due also to the closure of the historic Tivoli Theater, the choir was unable to present its annual Singing Christmas Tree performances, which would have been the 58th consecutive year of this widely celebrated holiday tradition.
They are proud to have partnered with the Chattanooga Choral Society for the Preservation of African-American Song, alumni of Ballet Tennessee, the Metropolitan Handbells, and the Baylor School Orchestra in this holiday collaboration.
