When it comes to one-pot meals, the perfect pan-seared steak, or just some good old-fashioned fried eggs, a well-seasoned cast-iron skillet can do it all. Naturally nonstick and practically indestructible, there’s a reason these pans have been beloved by chefs and home cooks for centuries, and they only get better with age. With cast iron, it all comes down to seasoning. Seasoning is a thin layer of oil that is baked into the pan (and heated past its smoke point) to protect the surface of the iron and render it non-stick. It’s also what gives the raw cast iron its shiny black patina. While maintaining that sleek nonstick coating can be a little tricky, with the right care, it can literally last a lifetime and then some.

It had been six months since Nick Bayer and his wife had been on a date. But with freezing temperatures gripping Philadelphia and indoor restaurant service banned, dinner in a tent wasn’t appealing. So instead of sitting outdoors at the Walnut Street Cafe, a local restaurant, they opted for an elegant meal served in a hotel room that had been converted into a private dining space.

Manhattan’s Paramount Group received an unsolicited takeover bid early last month for about two-thirds of what the company was worth prior to Covid. Just a few weeks later, the real estate investment trust’s board unanimously rejected the offer from activist investor Bow Street, noting that its offer was “inadequate and significantly undervalues” the office landlord run by Albert Behler. The hedge fund’s bid, however, was in line with Paramount’s stock price, which plunged at the onset of the pandemic and has hovered at just under $10 a share since. And the REIT, which has a market cap of about $2 billion, may still be on the table for a higher offer.
