A new malt barley handbook published by ICARDA aims at solving challenges surrounding malt barley production in Ethiopia. It compiles key findings from 28 scientific papers authored by partners and stakeholders.
Given barley s resilience to weather extremes, and its ability to grow in poor, degraded soils, barley is cultivated across Ethiopia for its nutritious grain and straw. From the wet highlands to the marginal lowlands, barley thrives, and is referred to as the ‘last crop before the desert.’
Malt barley, however, is a more recent addition to Ethiopia’s agricultural landscape, as it was introduced in the late 1960s to service a booming malting and brewing industry.

Syngenta Foundation Nigeria empowers Kano, Jigawa farmers with N10m inputs

A non-governmental organization, Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture, SFSA, has supported 13 hubs managers who will be servicing 13,000 smallholder farmers with the sales of certified seeds of cowpea and sorghum varieties worth over N10 million in Kano and Jigawa states.
This gesture came as part of the SFSA’s operational strategy which focuses on smallholders, productivity, and markets by extending science-based know-how, facilitating access to quality inputs, and linking farmers to markets in profitable ways.

Agriculture Presents Very Big Hope for Unemployed Nigerian Youths, IITA Chief Says
Head of the Abuja Station of International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) , Gbassey Tarawali, says agriculture is presenting a very big hope for young people in Nigeria and Africa in general.
He was speaking while receiving Farm Mates in a welcome ceremony at the Institute. He gave a brief background on IITA’s activities, highlighting the model, approaches, and lessons learned.
He also spoke of youth employment through the agricultural value chains, insisting that agriculture presented hope for the youth in Nigeria and Africa in general.
