As national and state leaders struggle to get COVID-19 under control, minority groups are at a higher risk for the virus. And that includes Indianapolis’ Burmese refugees, a tight-knit community. But providing these refugees with accurate information about the virus has been a challenge for public health workers.

Drive along the neighborhoods on Indianapolis’ southside and it’s hard to miss the international grocery stores, Burmese restaurants, and Chin-Christian churches. The city is home to an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 Burmese refugees, and on the south side, most of them are Chin, an ethnic group that fled religious persecution in the southeast Asian country of Myanmar. ....

INDIANAPOLIS The Indiana Department of Health today announced that 6,543 additional Hoosiers have been diagnosed with COVID-19 through testing at state and private laboratories. That brings to 511,485 the number of Indiana residents now known to have had the novel coronavirus following corrections to the previous day’s dashboard.
A total of 7,911 Hoosiers are confirmed to have died from COVID-19, an increase of 99 from the previous day. Another 352 probable deaths have been reported based on clinical diagnoses in patients for whom no positive test is on record. Deaths are reported based on when data are received by the state and occurred over multiple days. ....

Carmel Clay Schools hires new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coordinator

CARMEL, Ind. Carmel Clay Schools announced Terri Roberts-Leonard as the new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coordinator.
Roberts-Leonard will help the district’s recruiting, retaining, and supporting of a diverse staff, educating a diverse student body, and creating a safe and welcoming environment.
In August, a group of families in Carmel called on the school district to take action over concerns of racism at Carmel High School.
Organizers with Carmel Against Racial Injustice (CARI) said they had been contacted by numerous students at the school who detailed incidents of repeated racism at the high school.
At the time, the district responded by saying it had current and future plans to work in equity and inclusion as part of its strategic plan. The district also said it would not tolerate discrimination or harassment based on race, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion ....
