Liliana Cruz choked up at her kitchen table in New Bedford as she talked about faithfully paying her rent every month over the last five years. Despite that, her landlord has sent her a notice ordering her to leave the three-bedroom house by the end of this month.
“From one day to the next, it doesn’t matter what I pay, I have to go,” she said in Spanish. “And I don’t bother the landlord with anything. I spent my own money to fix the bathrooms. This is heavy, but God gives me strength.” ....

Report: In Boston, Black homeownership rate nearly half of white

May 12, 2021 2:59 pm
On average, Black households have about 23 percent of the wealth of a typical white household, down from 34.6 percent before the Great Recession, according to a new analysis by Zillow, an online real estate marketplace. Homeownership rates account for about 40 percent of that gap.
“Numerous studies demonstrate that there’s a wealth gap between households of people of color and white households,” said Maureen Flynn, deputy director of Boston Home Center, a city government agency. “The main difference between these groups is homeownership because that’s where most people accumulate their wealth.”
Homeownership and wealth are intricately tied together, said Flynn, which is why one of Acting Mayor Janey’s biggest priorities is to increase homeownership rates in the city.  ....

After judge vacates CDC eviction moratorium, Massachusetts advocates push for housing equity legislation
Updated May 06, 2021;
Massachusetts housing advocates say a federal judge’s decision to vacate a nationwide eviction moratorium eliminates the last defense for tenants struggling to pay rent during the COVID-19 pandemic.
U.S. District Judge Dabney L. Friedrich ruled on Wednesday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention overstepped in barring certain evictions during the pandemic, effectively vacating the national eviction moratorium that froze nonpayment eviction cases for eligible tenants.
Hours later, Friedrich agreed to temporarily stay her decision after the U.S. Justice Department asked for a hold while it appeals the ruling, Reuters reported. ....
