The seats currently held by Democrats Dennis Fotopoulos and Matthew Goode will be on the ballot in the Nov. 2 election. According to the Monmouth County Clerk’s Office, Republicans Rose Araneo and Ronald Peperoni are running to be elected to the terms, and Fotopoulos and Goode are seeking re-election. The new terms will run from Jan. 1, 2022 through Dec. 31, 2024. An individual who wants to run for Borough Council as an independent candidate has until June 8 to file a nominating petition and secure a place on the November general election ballot.

On April 6, council members authorized a $52,500 increase to a $564,000 contract that was awarded to Mott MacDonald in 2016 for upgrades to the Perry Street water treatment plant. The contract now totals $616,500 and the increase was made toward the construction phase contract of the project, according to a resolution. Independent News Briefs, March 17 Independent News Briefs, March 17 Municipal officials in Middletown have applied to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to seek bids for a solar energy farm at the NJ Transit station parking lot on Church Street in Middletown, according to a press release from the Sierra Club New Jersey Chapter. The power generated by the facility would provide a 10% to 20% reduction to two senior apartment complexes with 252 total residential units, according to the Sierra Club. “Middletown is taking important steps forward when it comes to community solar. … This would be one of the first community solar projects in the area and would allow nearby residents to benefit from solar energy. Putting solar over parking lots is important because it saves open space,” said Jeff Tittel, director of the New Jersey Sierra Club.
