Arts vision for historic church | Dandenong Star Journal

Negotiations to save one of Keysborough’s oldest standing buildings have taken a promising turn, Greater Dandenong councillors say.
Residents and councillors have lobbied to save the markedly-deteriorating 144-year-old Keysborough Methodist Church at 176 Chapel Road.
In the meantime, Greater Dandenong Council and the church’s owner the Uniting Church have been in months of talks about a possible handover for a ‘peppercorn fee’.
Land at the rear of the church may be set aside for “quality” large-lot housing.
Similarly, the council secured the historic Masonic lodge in Mason Street, Dandenong for $1. The Greater Dandenong Gallery of Art is soon to open on the renovated site. ....

'No decision' on cleared site | Dandenong Star Journal

A former home at 182 Chapel Road was demolished and most of the 4-hectare site’s vegetation cleared last week – though a subdivision permit has yet to be approved.
A ‘Keysborough Townhouses’ project is being promoted as “coming soon” by developer Peet, which reportedly bought the former market garden for $25 million in 2020.
Greater Dandenong city planning director Jody Bosman said the council was “currently assessing” and “yet to issue a decision” on the planning application for subdivision and vegetation removal.
“The application is exempt from advertising under the Greater Dandenong Planning Scheme.
“A planning permit is not required to demolish the existing dwelling, or for the removal of some of the vegetation on site.” ....

'New hope' for historic church | Dandenong Star Journal

Proposed heritage laws have given new hope to residents and Greater Dandenong Council campaigning to save a historic church in Keysborough.
The council is in “ongoing discussions” with the Uniting Church, which owns the 144-year-old Keysborough Methodist Church at 176 Chapel Road.
The striking Gothic-style building with coloured stained-glass windows and shingle roof is a rare remnant of the area’s 19th-century history.
It stands unused and markedly deteriorated next to a towering housing estate to the south and a proposed sub-division to the north.
On 2 February, the State Government announced a heritage Bill to protect historic properties from unlawful demolition and neglect. ....
