Community satisfaction with Council’s performance
Indigo Shire has recorded an increase in overall satisfaction with its performance in the annual state-wide Community Satisfaction Survey.
Overall performance increased to 60 points, up from 57 points last year, with almost all demographic and geographic cohorts reporting an improvement in their perceptions of Council in the past year.
Mayor Jenny O’Connor says the results are pleasing, particularly given the unprecedented events of the last year including multiple Covid-19 lockdowns, border closures and ongoing economic and social impacts from the pandemic and the 2020 summer bushfires.
“We are really proud that during a period of such uncertainty and upheaval that our residents have expressed positivity towards Council’s performance. We know there are still areas to improve upon, but this is heartening.” ....

A break-even budget that focusses on rebuilding the local economy, with a big capital works spend are among the highlights of Indigo Shire’s 2021-22 budget.
At the June Council meeting, Council adopted the budget along with the new Council Plan 2021-2025 and 10-year Community Vision as well as a number of other strategic documents.
While the budget focusses on the next 12 months, the Council Plan sets out the key priorities for Council to focus on over the four years of its term.
Under the new Local Government Act 2020, all Victorian Councils must develop a Community Vision, which has an outlook of at least 10 years and describes the community’s aspirations for the future of the Shire. ....

$2 million to LED streetlights in 2021/22 Draft Budget as part of Council’s drive towards carbon neutrality
The City of Ballarat will invest $2 million, made up of $500,000 in 2021/22 and $1.5 million carried over from the current budget, into the installation of LED (light emitting diode) streetlights across the municipality’s minor roads network as part of the 2021/22 Draft Budget.
The 2021/22 draft budget includes a range of climate action and emissions reduction initiatives, including $250,000 towards the progression of a business case for a Materials Recovery Facility, $500,000 towards street trees to support Council’s long-term commitment to double the tree canopy across Ballarat by 2040 through the Urban Forest Action Plan, and $10,000 to begin development of a Net-Zero Community Emissions Plan. ....

Warrnambool City Council is one of 46 Victorian Councils to sign on to VECO, the Victorian Energy Collaboration, the largest ever emissions reduction project by local government in Australia.
VECO, led by Darebin City Council in Melbourne’s north, will provide 45 per cent of all Victorian Councils’ electricity requirements with 100 per cent renewables, reducing greenhouse emissions by 260,000 tonnes of C02-e every year.
Provided by Red Energy, the 240GWh of clean power is equivalent to powering 48,000 homes with renewables or removing the emissions from 90,000 cars every year.
Initiated by and facilitated with the Victorian Greenhouse Alliances, VECO recognises the benefits of renewable energy for the environment and the economy. ....
