£1.1m Covid fund hailed but report warns of future of voluntary sector


WILTSHIRE Community Foundation’s report into its response to the pandemic has praised the work of charities who helped keep the county safe – but sounds a word of warning about the financial future of the voluntary sector.
The report charts how it distributed more than £1.1 million from its Wiltshire and Swindon Coronavirus Response and Recovery Fund launched last March, days before the country went into the first lockdown. The community foundation made 265 grants to 199 different groups over 12 months, with more than 154,000 people benefitting.
But joint chief executives Vicky Hickey and Fiona Oliver warn that a year of lost fundraising and revenue as well as extra expense has taken its toll on many groups. ....

Wiltshire charities on financial brink due to impact of Covid on funds

CHARITIES who lost out on thousands of pounds of fundraising thanks to Covid are facing a tough 2021.
Rosemary Macdonald, who left Wiltshire Community Foundation to become chief executive of the UK body earlier this year, is warning that some grassroots voluntary groups might not survive without financial help.
“Local charities across the UK are teetering on a funding cliff edge. Without urgent intervention before the end of the financial year, we can expect many thousands of local charities to be pushed over the precipice,” said Mrs Macdonald, who lives near Westbury. ....
