By-elections are being held in two contrasting Darlington Borough Council wards – Hummersknott and Red Hall and Lingfield – following the resignation of two councillors elected in May 2019. Labour councillor for Red Hall and Lingfield Sam Howarth stepped down from the role, for which an £8,188 annual allowance is paid, after moving away from the area. Conservative councillor for Hummersknott Paul Howell encountered criticism for continuing in the role as well as a Durham County councillor following his election as the Sedgefield constituency MP.

A DOG found after he was missing for nine days leading to a huge search campaign via Facebook has been widely welcomed by our readers. Bear, a chocolate-coloured Sprocker spaniel, was found hiding under a car at Quarry Auto Spares, a scrapyard in Wyke, yesterday. The scrapyard’s owner called Bear’s owner to say the beloved pet was hungry and crying under the car. His owners picked the dog up from the scrapyard and he was taken to Vets4Pets in Brighouse. Bear was fine but had lost 2kg in weight while he was missing. The news proved popular on the Telegraph & Argus Facebook page, with yesterday’s story reaching more than 1.6million people, 177,112 engagements, 1,600 comments, 46,000 reactions and 2,700 shares.
