London introduces a new 'green woman' crossing symbol

A new “green woman” traffic light signal has been installed around London.
Transport for London (TfL) announced today on International Women’s Day (8 March) that the new symbols have been installed in more than 20 places around the city.
It said they “veer away from the common, narrow representations of women”.
According to TfL the symbols “depict a diverse range of women and challenge the common image of a woman in a dress to signify gender”.
They also “serve as a reminder of the huge contribution women make to all aspects of society, including the transport network, and improve the visibility of women on London’s streets”. ....

Londoners out and about today may notice something different about the capital’s traffic light men they’ve been transformed into women.
New ‘green woman’ pedestrian signals have been installed at more than 20 locations across the city, including Exhibition Road in South Kensington and high streets such as Clapham and Tottenham.
The redesign has been carried out to mark International Women’s Day and celebrate the achievements of women in the capital. ....

The green man traffic signal has been replaced by a woman at pedestrian crossings in London.
Transport for London (TfL) said the switch was aimed at “recognising the contribution women make to all aspects of society”.
The change was made on International Women’s Day at 20 locations in the capital, such as high streets in Clapham, Brixton and Lewisham, at Hyde Park Corner and outside King’s Cross St Pancras Tube station.
The lights have been designed to meet the safety features of the conventional green man figure (TfL/PA)
Rather than the traditional image of a person wearing a dress to signify gender, the signals feature a range of women in different shapes and sizes. ....
