Green River Couple Honored with Distinguished Citizens Award

The Chamber said Julian puts his talents as a builder and electrician to work to support various community projects and organizations, and Patsy dedicates multitudes of her time supporting individuals and organizations throughout the community.
“We feel overwhelmed by the honor of Distinguished Citizens. What we do is part of our makeup and we know that there are many people in Green River that are just as deserving, if not more so,” Patsy told SwetwaterNOW.

The Sorensens have called Green River home for 37 years, and they find that volunteering where they can is simply their way of giving back to the community they love so dearly. ....

2020 hindsight: A look back at a tumultuous year


The end of 2020 couldn’t get here fast enough for many. It’s been the year of the toilet paper shortage, face masks, quarantines, job losses and political strife. It will be remembered as the Presidential election year when a pandemic altered life for people across the globe.
Coronavirus affected life in Madison County, too. And there were numerous COVID-19 stories on the front page of The Madison County Journal in 2020, but there was plenty of local news not related to the virus this year.

Highland Adventist School students took part in a Live Nativity scene at the school this month. A bonfire burned during the event and the public was invited to enjoy some hot chocolate and snacks.
ELKINS With COVID-19 nixing plans for a traditional Christmas program at the Highland Adventist School, staff members came up with an alternate solution so that students and others could celebrate the holiday.
The accredited school, which is located on Old Leadsville Road next to Highland Park, offered an event in which the students were part of a Live Nativity scene outside the facility. The Christian tradition, that represents the birth of Jesus, was a big success, said the school’s principal, Cheryl Jacko. ....
